A Step-by-Step Guide to Researching and Publishing in ABAI Journals

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of writing a research paper? This guide offers a roadmap, starting with how to select a topic in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that sparks your interest and narrows your focus.

Writing a research paper can seem like a daunting task, but by breaking it down into manageable steps, it becomes much more achievable. For instance, writing a research paper on Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) requires a thorough understanding of the field, its principles, applications, and current debates. Here are some fundamental things to consider.

  1. Choose a Research Topic: Even under the field of ABA there are numerous topics which can be researched and documented. Hence, select a topic that genuinely interests you. This will make the research process more engaging and less of a chore. It is important to have a clear motivation behind selecting the specific topic for research.

  2. Define your Scope & Research Question: Since ABA is a broad field, there should be specificity and the area you want to focus on like, whether it will be about specific populations or specific intervention and techniques, outcomes of ABA therapy or ethical considerations, historical development of ABA or emerging trends. Research questions will guide your literature search and the direction of the paper. Therefore, research questions should be well crafted and it should align with the research objectives.

  3. Thorough Literature Review: Utilize credible sources; focus on academic journals, books, reputable databases, and scholarly articles. Read sources carefully, paying attention to the authors’ arguments, evidence and conclusions. Synthesizing the arguments and not just summarizing the conflicting results, gaps in the literature and area of future research is essential to have a robust research paper.

Furthermore, peer review journals act as a preferred secondary literature for its critical filter, subjecting research papers to scrutiny by independent experts in the same field. This helps identify flaws in methodology, analysis, and conclusions, ensuring the research meets established scientific and academic standards.

Reviewers verify factual errors, inconsistencies, and logical fallacies. They review whether the methods used are sound and if the data supports the presented conclusions, thus ensuring the accuracy and validity of the research. Reviewers can highlight overlooked literature or suggest additional experiments or analyses that could enhance the research.

  4. Methodology (if conducting an empirical research): Describe how you conducted your research on ABA, research methods applied and data analysis. This section should be detailed enough for others to replicate your study. It encompasses experimental design, operational definitions, reliability of the data and social validity.

  5. Proper Citation: Proper citation is a cornerstone of academic integrity and good research practice. It is not just about avoiding plagiarism but it is also about contributing to the collective body of knowledge in a responsible, ethical, and credible manner.

Technically, there are two components of citation, in-text citations and reference list/bibliography. In-text citations are brief references within the body of your text that point to the full source in your reference list which are indicated through footnote or endnote.

Reference list/bibliography is a comprehensive list at the end of your article that provides all the detailed information for every source you cited.

It’s important to note that different academic disciplines and journals use specific citation styles. For example, ABAI journals typically follow APA (American Psychological Association) style, so authors should ensure their references and formatting align with these guidelines.

  6. Structure of the Research Paper: The paper begins with an abstract, which is a concise summary of your paper, introduction of the paper, followed by literature review, methodology (if empirical), results, and discussion followed by a conclusion. Lastly, references/bibliography citing all sources accurately and consistently formatted according to the required style guide.

While publishing a research paper whether it is for a journal or as a chapter for a co-edited book, the merit of the research work is based on the coherence and the relevance of the research. However, if you carefully consider the points cited above, then you can write a comprehensive, well-researched and impactful paper on Applied Behaviour Analysis in particular or any other research paper in general.
